Disappointed with speed humps in North Ranch

2009-03-12 / Letters

I am disturbed by the recent addition of speed humps on Upper Ranch Road. I had read about this upcoming event in the Acorn, and I remember it wasn't a popular event, especially in the eyes of emergency personnel (e.g. fire department).

I believe it required a change in the city code/law regarding its passage. Well, the speed humps are here. I know I wasn't consulted as a nearby neighbor or had an opportunity to vote on this matter even though I use the street on a regular basis—but damned be the public or their needs.

I'm embarrassed as a fellow North Ranch resident at this waste of taxpayer's money in these tough economic times with schools being closed and budgets being cut. It seems to me that this is an example of an elitist attitude among some North Ranch residents, where some parochial objective is accomplished—damned be the cost or effect on law abiding citizens. I know the stated objective is to slow down speeders on Upper Ranch, but if every street in Westlake Village with speeders implemented this strategy, we would neither be able to afford the cost or tolerate the inconvenience and wear and tear on our vehicles.

It also appears to accrue a benefit to the residents of Upper Ranch Road by discouraging anyone from coming through their neighborhood and creates their own private street. I know I will now use other streets to get to and from my home. Tom Atkins Westlake Village
