USA Field Hockey relying on area athletes to produce

Several local athletes will represent USA Field Hockey at the 2009 Men's Pan American Cup, to be held today through March 15 in Santiago, Chile.

Players from the city of Moorpark include Jed Cunningham, Jonathan Ginolfi, Pat Harris and Sean Harris.

Kevin Barber, Pat Cota and Will Holt are listed as Camarillo residents, while Ian Scally is a native of Thousand Oaks.

Nate Coolidge, of Sandwich, Mass., attends Moorpark College.

The Pan American Cup pits the region's top nine teams in competition for a spot in the 2010 World Cup.

The USA will face Argentina, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay in Pool A, while 2008 Olympic Games participants Canada highlight Pool B. The winner will qualify for the World Cup, to be held in New Delhi, India, March 7 to 20.

The Pan American Cup team roster features a solid group of veteran players complemented by the next generation of USA Men's National Team stars.

Pat Harris, Cota and Jarred Martin combine for more than 150 international caps, while Holt, Ginolfi and Kevin Barber are among the athletes that took home the bronze medal at the '08 Junior Pan Am Cup at Trinidad and Tobago.

Kevin Segeren was named Best Goalkeeper at Trinidad.
