Help the economy and newspapers: Charge for Internet

2009-03-05 / Letters

I have a simple solution for the world's financial crisis.

Charge for the Internet.

It's putting many businesses under, most notably daily newspapers. Why? Because it's free. Simply charge senders 1 cent per email just like we pay for postage stamps. As a nice side effect, spam would disappear.

Double the charge for Internet service providers and make the difference a tax. Since every website already calculates hits to its site, charge them 1 cent for every hit. And if you really want to stimulate the economy and level the playing field for brick and mortar businesses, charge the consumer a penny a minute to visit websites.

Turn the vast wasteland into a thriving tax base and get people to spend more time and money back on planet Earth. Billy Martin Thousand Oaks
