DayJams rock music camp coming this summer

2009-03-05 / Family

Has your child ever dreamed of becoming a rock star? This summer their dreams can come true at DayJams, "America's original rock music day camp," scheduled for July 20 to 24 at St. Martin-in-the-Fields School, 7136 Winnetka Ave., Canoga Park. Campers may attend one or both weeks

Throughout 10 summers, DayJams has encouraged more than 14,000 children nationwide, between the ages of 8 and 15, to develop their musical skills by offering instruction on guitar, bass, keyboards, drums and vocals.

Campers are placed in a band on Monday and are onstage playing for family and friends by Friday.

All bands are given the opportunity to write and perform original songs. The friendly and creative curriculumbased environment guides campers through songwriting, instrument lessons, clinics, art classes and a live concert performance.

As one Philadelphia camper said, "DayJams makes you feel like you're in a band with a manager and a hit single."

For brand-new musicians, the camp is a way to get a jump-start. For the experienced player, it's an opportunity to study with some of the best musicians in town. Based on the knowledge that every child has something to gain from a positive musical experience, DayJams contributes to the cultural growth and education of the nation's young generation.

The program was created by David Smolover and Nat Gunod, founders of the National Guitar Workshop, a summer program established in 1984 for older teenagers and adults. In response to a need for a program that catered to younger children, they created DayJams in 1999. The program has since expanded to 22 locations nationwide.

Space is limited and early registeration is encouraged. For more information or notification of Open House announcements, call (800) 295-5956 or visit www.dayjams.com.
