A fine first lady
      HISTORY COMES TO LIFE— Ladera Elementary School fifthgrader T.J. Barnholtz, 10, portrays Eleanor Roosevelt in the school's quad. Last month, Ladera's fifth-grade classes transformed the quad into a living history museum, and the students gave speeches about the characters they portrayed.

Library's radio museum archives still in limbo
      It's unknown what will become of radio broadcasting artifacts, sealed in a bank's basement at Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street, that were slated to be included in the American Radio Archives at the Grant Brimhall/ Thousand Oaks Library.

State makes T.O. add more density to city plan
      The state is reviewing the City Council's rezoning last month of several areas in Thousand Oaks. The rezoning was done to make greater housing density possible. California's Regional Housing Needs Assessment (RHNA) calculates anticipated population growth in the state and mandates cities—even ones at build-out like T.O.

CEO of Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center resigns
      Jim Sherman's resignation came as a surprise to the employees of Los Robles Hospital and Medical Center, spokesperson Kris Carraway-Bowman said. Sherman, 48, was the president and CEO of Los Robles Hospital for 4½ years. Under his leadership the hospital added a $120-million expansion.

Embezzler gets prison sentence
      Alan Olin, 48, of Thousand Oaks, was recently sentenced to 28 months in state prison and ordered to pay $120,735 in restitution to the Conejo Valley United Soccer Club for embezzling that amount while acting as treasurer for the club.

City must address homeless shelter issue
      Thousand Oaks plans to amend the city's zoning ordinance by 2010 to allow for an emergency shelter for the homeless as required by the state.

City employees brainstorm creative money-saving ideas
      City employees have come up with 217 ways to help the city overcome a $3.2-million budget gap. Their ideas were presented during the City Council's goalsetting session on Feb. 24 at the Los Robles Golf Course. Nothing appeared to be sacred as the workers took a hard look at how the city could come up with more cash.

Mardi Gras ball breaks own records
      The 17th annual Mardi Gras Ball, which benefits Community Conscience's Under One Roof, set a record attendance, according to chair Ricki Mikkelsen. The ball attracted 400 guests and volunteers, said Mikkelsen, cochair with Barbara Ashcraft.

      Artist and illustrator Harlan West of Westlake Village was awarded $1,500 recently for creating the design that was chosen as the official poster of the 26th annual California Strawberry Festival, scheduled for May 16 and 17 in Oxnard.

      GIVING BACK TO THE COMMUNITY— Girl Scout Troop No. 133 of Thousand Oaks collects their President's Volunteer Service Award and the California Governor's Award for community service. Each girl earned a minimum of 50 hours of volunteer service hours in one year.
