Costs of race for state Senate set a record
The numbers are in.
The race for Senate in the19th District cost Republican Tony Strickland, Democrat HannahBeth Jackson and advocate groups nearly $11 million, making it the most expensive political campaign in Ventura County history.
Strickland nabbed the seat in a race that was so close it took nearly a month to determine the winner. The final tally revealed he won by fewer than 900 votes out of about 400,000 cast.
The final campaign reports were filed with the secretary of state earlier this month.
Jackson spent about $4.33 million, while Strickland spent $4.27 million. Advocate groups contributed more than $2 million. Money raised went primarily to advertising, with $200,000 to broadcast television stations, $170,000 to cable television franchises and nearly $80,000 to radio stations.
In the final two weeks before the election, nearly $3 million was spent.
Spending in the StricklandJackson race didn't just top county and state lists but came in as the second most expensive in the nation last fall after an $11.4million New York congressional seat race.
The 19th District extends from Port Hueneme and Camarillo to Moorpark, Simi Valley, Thousand Oaks and the northwestern end of the San Fernando Valley.
