Trustee's remarks infuriate a district teacher

2009-02-12 / Letters

As a former Glenwood Elementary School parent and a current district teacher, I find Mr. Dunn's "routine statement" about the type of education offered at Glenwood incredibly offensive.

To state that teachers must teach to the "lowest common denominator" is an insult to the children and families there.

If the reasoning behind this ignorant statement is the fact that Glenwood has a population that is 50 percent to 60 percent English-language learners, it shows Mr. Dunn's ignorance about, or prejudice toward, the English-language learners in our district.

Mr. Dunn continually claims he represents families in this district. Which families? It's certainly not the families of English-language learners, not the families that support diversity in education, not the families with members working in education.

Just who is it that Mr. Dunn represents?

Is it those who would choose to segregate our schools, keeping "the lowest common denominator" children elsewhere, as long as it was away from their superior learners?

Again, it boggles the mind to see Mr. Dunn sit as a representative on a board of education.

Trustees on any board of education should be looking to ensure that equal education is possible at all schools within their district, not claiming that children will receive a better education at one school over another.

Not only has Mr. Dunn done just that, he says he doesn't understand why such a "routine statement" warrants attention.

Regarding the education my children received from the awesome teachers and staff at Glenwood, it's taken one of them on to UC Santa Cruz, another to UC Berkeley, and a third continues toward a college goal with AP classes at TOHS.

So, Mr. Dunn, the education these three children received at Glenwood gave them the foundation they needed to succeed in the areas of higher education, while also giving them an appreciation for the diversities of this wonderful world.

Just what is it you're offering the children of this district? Laurie White Thousand Oaks
