2009-02-12 / Family

The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps has openings for a limited number of young people ages 11 to 17 to join the crew of Langley Division.

The corps is composed of young people who have an interest in seamanship, the military or other seagoing careers.

Applicants must be crime-free, drugfree, physically fit and approved by their school.

Langley Division, representing more than five counties, trains at the Lost Hills Sheriff's Station in Calabasas from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on alternate Saturdays.

The corps participates in several parades and special events each year. The program is managed by volunteers dedicated to instilling the core values of pride, service and patriotism.

Sea Cadets wear the traditional Navy uniforms and can participate in advanced training programs including international exchange programs, scuba certification, Navy SEAL training and Federal Aviation Administration ground school.

Several cadets from Langley Division have attended basic training at Port Hueneme Naval Base and taken cruises aboard U.S. Navy ships.

The program is also seeking adult volunteers, with or without prior military service. Those with seamanship, administrative, engineering and fundraising skills are especially needed.

To make an appointment, call Lt. Cmdr. Pamela Silver at (818) 822-6815 or send an e-mail to PSW112@aol.com
