Robert Wagner comes to town
Silver screen legend Robert Wagner is coming to town to promote his bestselling book, "Pieces of My Heart."
The memoir recounts both joyous and tragic events in Wagner's life, including his younger days watching Clark Gable and Cary Grant golf, and the death of his beloved wife, Natalie Wood.
Wagner will be appearing at the Thousand Oaks Library tomorrow at 7 p.m. to discuss and sign his book.
"The book has had a tremendous response," Wagner said. "It's been so gratifying. I never had any idea that it would have the kind of response it's had. I didn't think it was going to happen. It's been quite an experience. When you write a book, you don't have an audience, so it's different."
Wagner wrote for the first time about the death of Natalie Wood, to whom he was married from 1957 to 1962 and from 1972 until Wood's death in 1981. While Wood, Wagner and their friend Christopher Walken were boating off Catalina Island, Wood fell from their yacht and drowned
Wagner said writing some parts of the book was very difficult, but "some of it was very joyful. . . . I had some difficulty letting the book go."
Wagner has been active in Hollywood for more than five decades, starring in three longrunning series: "It Takes a Thief," "Switch" and "Hart to Hart." He also starred in films like "A Kiss Before Dying," "The Longest Day," "The Pink Panther" and, most recently, the Austin Powers movies.
"I've had an extraordinary career," Wagner said. "It's been kind of a remarkable journey the way it all tied together and with all the people involved in it. I wanted to pay tribute to the people so responsible for my success.
"There have been so many people who have been so wonderful to me," Wagner added. "They all have pieces of my heart."
Wagner also said he wrote to inspire others who dream of breaking into Hollywood.
"I wanted to be in this wonderful, magical world of the film industry since I was a little boy, and it came true," Wagner said. "I wanted to put it down to give people hope that dreams really can come true."
Wagner's three daughters are grown. Wagner's daughter Katie had a baby girl in 2006.
"It's wonderful," Wagner said of being a grandfather. "I have such a wonderful family. My wife has been so wonderful to me. Many things have happened to me in my lifetime. It's really about how that all came about, how I've been so blessed in my life."
Wagner and his wife, former James Bond girl Jill St. John, split their time between Aspen, Colo., and Los Angeles.
Wagner said he's working on getting some financing to produce some movies.
He recently completed a run on CBS' top comedy, "Two and a Half Men," starring Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer.
"I had such a good time," Wagner said. "It was wonderful. It was run so well and written so well. I was kind of disappointed when it ended."
The show went back to its original cast, cutting out guest stars. Wagner's last episode revealed that he had a much younger lover, played by actress Jenny McCarthy. Wagner's character died in the bedroom with McCarthy.
"I thought, at least if I'm going to be taken out, it's a pretty good way to go—having Jenny McCarthy making love to me," Wagner said with a laugh. "The show was great."
Wagner will be at the Grant Brimhall/Thousand Oaks Library at 7 p.m. Feb. 13. The library is at 1401 E. Janss Road.
