Mardi Gras Ball names volunteers as King and Queen, sells tickets
Harry Selvin Longtime community volunteers Harry Selvin and Susan Holt have been named King and Queen of the 17th annual Mardi Gras Ball.
The Community Conscience/ Under One Roof-sponsored event will begin at 6 p.m. Sat., Feb. 21 at Hyatt Westlake Plaza.
Selvin moved to Conejo Valley in 1990 and leads the Harry Selvin Big Band. He has actively supported Community Conscience over the years and many of the nonprofit organizations in the Under One Roof building.
Selvin and his late wife, Gerelda, were among several parties who made multiyear pledges to the "Raise the Roof" campaign. That effort added significant square footage to the Under One Roof building in the 1990s.
The Senior Concerns Thrift Shop Bargain Boutique has a plaque which honors Gerelda and Harry Selvin as a tribute to their generosity.
Living in Westlake with his wife, Maureen, Selvin is a member of T.O. Rotary Club and is past president of the club.
He's been on the board of Senior Concerns for five years. He has also helped Hospice of the Conejo, Many Mansions (formerly in the Under One Roof building), Wellness Community, the Jewish Federation, the City of Hope, the American Heart Association, the Polio Foundation, and the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, among others.
Susan Holt He was voted "Man of the Year" in 2003 by the Thousand Oaks-Westlake Village Regional Chamber of Commerce for his many contributions to the community. Selvin also served on the theater board of governors for the T.O. Civic Arts Plaza Kavli and Scherr theaters, and he's a member of Alliance for the Arts.
Susan Holt has been a 14year member of the Community Conscience board of directors.
She was president for two years, including during the "Raise the Roof" campaign. Holt also served on the Conejo Historical Society board for eight years and is currently on the group's executive board.
She's serving her fourth term on the board of directors for Conejo Recreation and Park District. Holt was executive director of the Oakleaf Music Festival for eight years and was a founding member of STARS (Science, Technology And Research Support), serving as its founding president.
Both will be crowned at the Feb. 21 black tie optional event, which begins with a champagne reception and music by the Riverboat Jazz Band. There will be live and silent auctions, dinner and dancing to Fifth Avenue Orchestra and Entertainment.
The Mardi Gras Ball chairs are Ricki Mikkelsen and Barbara Ashcraft.
