Stimulus package needs some work

2009-02-05 / Letters

For someone who campaigned on change, President Obama is off to a weak start. In his short time in office he has proposed a so called "economic stimulus" package, which is really nothing more than business as usual in Washington. The legislation contains many examples of business as usual, such as:

•$20 million "for the removal of small- to medium-sized fish passage barriers"

•$25 million to rehabilitate off-roading (ATV) trails

•$34 million to remodel the Department of Commerce headquarters

•$70 million to "support supercomputing activities" for climate research

•$150 million for honey bee insurance

These items are a small example of the many wasteful items in the bill.

I fail to see how the stimulus package is going to do anything to help the average person who has fallen on hard economic times. In the long run, this bill will do nothing but waste taxpayer money and raise taxes on current and future generations.

If the president is serious about change, he needs to abandon his current direction, which is more reminiscent of the type of policies we've come to expect from Washington the last eight years. Jason Spadaro Thousand Oaks
