Promoting life without plastic bags
     IRIS SMOOT/Acorn Newspapers CALLING FOR A GREENER WORLD—Genna Nolan, 9, left, Lars Haavaldsen, 7, campaign organizer Lisa Sloan Strom and Everett Strom, 8, talk with Eddie Burzinski of Newbury Park about the importance of using reusable shopping bags. The group was outside Albertsons supermarket on a recent Sunday in Newbury Park, reminding shoppers that the next day would be a "Day Without Plastic Bags" in Conejo Valley. The effort was in conjunction with the National Day of Service, which was Monday.

New private school opens in Ventura County
      Beacon Hill Classical Academy, a Christian classical school in Ventura County, will open its doors in the fall of 2009 for kindergarten, first and second grades in Camarillo. The intention is to add one grade every year through grade 12.

Fireside concert comes to Newbury Park
      A fireside concert will be held at 8 p.m. Fri., Feb. 13 at Borchard Community Center, 190 Borchard Road, Newbury Park. The concert will feature performances by Richard Berman, Gemini, The Cowboy Balladeers and Chris Cairns Bluegrass Band.

      The Thousand Oaks Art Association will host the annual juried show through Feb. 27 at the Thousand Oaks Community Gallery, 2331-A Borchard Road, Newbury Park. The reception will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sun., Feb. 8 at the gallery, with an awards ceremony at 5 p.m.

TOHS cheer team competes today in National Championships
      Thousand Oaks High School's coed varsity competition cheer team will compete in UCA's National High Schools Cheerleading Championship today, Thurs., Feb. 5, in Orlando, Fla. The competition will air on ESPN. This is the first time TOHS has particpated in the competition. The team consists of 13 girls and seven boys.
