City shouldn't just give the cold shoulder to its hobbyists

I read in the Acorn that when asked for help in using city property for flying model gliders, Thousand Oaks City Manager Scott Mitnick said, "We're in the wastewater business there and not in the recreation business."

It seems to me Mr. Mitnick is in the public service business and his answer doesn't serve the public.

The city of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power provides water and electricity to millions of customers and also manages to provide ample recreation opportunities on its properties.

Examples: kayaking on the Lower Owens River and fishing at Crowley Lake, one of the finest trout fishing venues in the country.

It seems hard to believe that zoning ordinances would prohibit such an incidental use as flying model airplanes, and, if so, zoning can be amended.

The city of T.O. should serve the public by allowing model gliders to soar silently on its vacant property. My father and I connected when I was growing up by building and flying model airplanes; it's a wonderful, rewarding and educational hobby.

Please, Mr. Mitnick, think outside the sewer plant and help these people. Bill Becher Westlake Village
