Motorist drives into The Lakes
A Chevy Blazer ended up in the water at The Lakes shopping center, and its driver was arrested after a traffic accident at 6:09 p.m. Jan. 22.
First, the green 1998 SUV rearended a gray 2007 Lexus stopped in traffic. The Lexus was driven by a woman who was traveling east on Thousand Oaks Boulevard.
According to arresting officer Dep. Harnarong Ananta, witnesses said Luis Santiago, 23, the driver of the SUV, then backed up at about 30 mph, went over the curb and drove about 300 feet into The Lakes fountain.
There were no skid marks on the street at the scene to show an attempt to stop before impact, Ananta said.
Both vehicles had moderate damage. The woman in the Lexus was treated for back pain at the scene, he said.
After taking a breathalyzer test, Santiago was found to have three times over the legal limit of alcohol in his system, according to Ananta.
Santiago was arrested and charged with felony hit and run, felony DUI and driving without a license. His bail was set at $50,000.
