Spirituality writer to speak at Cal Lutheran

2009-01-22 / Faith

Acclaimed poet and bestselling author Kathleen Norris will discuss spirituality at a free presentation at 2 p.m. Sun., Jan. 25 at Samuelson Chapel, California Lutheran University, corner of Olsen Road and Campus Drive, Thousand Oaks.

Norris has written four New York Times bestsellers. The autobiographical "The Virgin of Bennington" is a narrative of her early life trying to find a place for herself amid the cultural tumult of the 1960s and 1970s.

"Dakota: A Spiritual Geography" was inspired by her life on the Plains after she and her husband moved from New York to South Dakota.

"The Cloister Walk" is a diary of her experience at a Benedictine monastery.

"Amazing Grace: A Vocabulary of Faith" continues her theme that the spiritual world is rooted in the chaos of daily life.

Her most recent book, "Acedia & Me: A Marriage, Monks, and a Writer's Life," is a study of acedia, the ancient word for the spiritual side of sloth. She explores this indifference, which can offer a spiritual morphine when life becomes too challenging.

Norris has also published seven books of poetry.

The Office of the President, the Office of Campus Ministry, the Religion Department, and the English Department are sponsoring the presentation.
