Two groups received a total of $8,900 from the city's fund for unanticipated community events.

The Newbury Park Steelers Youth Football Cheer Team was given $2,400 so they can compete in the JAMZ National Competition in Las Vegas in February.

The 24-girl team qualified to go to nationals during a regional competition in December after the regular Community Events Endowment Fund application period.

The Business and Professional Optimist Club of Conejo Valley asked for $10,000, but received $6,500 to assist in putting on a Million Dollar Hole-In-One Golf Shootout. The city limited the grant to 10 percent of the organization's $65,000 budget, in accordance with the city's grant guidelines.

"A lot of groups depended on Conejo Valley Days to raise money," Steve Shultz, Optimist Club member explained.

Councilmember Jacqui Irwin commended the club for trying to fill the vacuum left by the cancellation of Conejo Valley Days.

Youth groups could raise funds by selling tickets to the Optimists' golf event, Shultz said. Tickets would sell for $20 and the youth groups would keep $10, he said.

About $6,100 will remain in the city's Unanticipated Community Events Endowment Fund Grant for other organizations that may need assistancebefore June 30, the end of this fiscal year.

The fund was established in 1985 to support artistic, recreational, sporting and educational events that promote the city. Annual funding gives out $85,000 of the $100,000 in grant money, leaving $15,000 for unanticipated event needs.
