Blind dog needs a loving home
Pirate, a 7-year-old mixed breed Lhasa Apso, is blind. On Jan. 31, the pure white, lovable bundle of energy will be without a home- - another victim of the economic recession.
For the past three years, Pirate has been in a foster home, awaiting permanent adoption; however, the right adoption match hasn't surfaced, and now the previous caretaker must relocate and can't keep the small dog.
The Agoura Animal Shelter originally asked the Hogan Family Foundation in Newbury Park to help Pirate regain his health after he lost his eyes due to neglect from previous owners.
The Foundation is now mounting a grassroots campaign to find loving people to take in the special needs dog. The Foundation is handing out flyers throughout the area, including canvassing pet stores, veterinarian offices, churches and senior centers. It's also working through its volunteer network at Gardens of the World in Thousand Oaks in hopes of finding a new home for Pirate.
Christine Hogan, executive director of the Hogan Family Foundation, said, "Pirate is very affectionate and intelligent. Although he can't see, he gets around just fine, once a routine is set for him and he becomes familiar with his surroundings. He has adapted amazingly well.
"We're making every possible effort to place him in a home that offers love and a calm, safe environment," she said.
"Pirate is a great companion dog and gets along well with other dogs and cats, but not as a playmate. The perfect match would be a retired couple or person who's home most of the day. He enjoys being with people, going for walks and riding in cars."
Anyone interested in adopting Pirate should contact Lifeline 4 Paws Dog Rescue at (805) 231-5993 or send an e-mail to info@lifeline4paws.org.
