Fire causes damage to theaters
      Firefighters responded with five engines and two ladder trucks to a blaze at the Muvico movie theaters under construction at The Oaks mall in Thousand Oaks on Sunday. The first call went out at 4:24 p.m. with the report of smoke in the hallway.

      A plan to increase parking at the Thousand Oaks Auto Mall may be modified due to the sluggish economy. The Auto Mall in Thousand Oaks has about 600 existing street parking spaces and 1,000 employees who need a place to park. Even though some dealers offer employee parking, not much room is left for customers.

Volunteers needed to count the homeless in Thousand Oaks
      Many Mansions is seeking volunteers to help with the 2009 Homeless Count. A volunteer training session will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Mon., Jan. 19 at Many Mansions Villa Garcia property, 1419 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks. The session is recommended but not mandatory to participate in the count.

Residents are providing tips but cops want more
      Police have been receiving calls from residents who think they know the identity of a man who's been indecently exposing himself to women in T.O. After a detailed description of the man ran in the paper, several people have called with tips that so far haven't panned out, said Detective Greg Tougas.

Retail sales for holiday season may have been better here compared to rest of U.S
      Officials at local malls say holiday results here may be better than they were nationwide. The Oaks mall had a "tremendous year" in 2008, according to spokesperson Nicole Flynn, with major stores hitting their benchmarks and the new Nordstrom excited about its first-year sales.

Judge Clark retires
      Judge Bruce A. Clark of Ventura County Superior Court retired on Jan. 4 after 30 years on the bench. He's the longest serving judge in the history of Ventura County. Clark was elected to municipal court in 1978, and served as its presiding judge in 1984, 1992 and 1993.

T.O. girl dives for the cross in Ventura
     'WE HAVE A WINNER'- - During St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church's Epiphany and Blessing of the Waters ceremony, a cross is thrown into the water at Ventura Harbor. The person who retrieves the cross, above, is believed to receive special blessings for the entire year after a prayer is read over him or her. The winner was Thousand Oaks High School sophomore Eleni Misthos, left, a member of the water polo team. The ceremony took place last Sunday.
