Sierra Club will offer wilderness training

The Sierra Club Los Padres Chapter will offer a Wilderness Basics course from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 20 to March 10, in the Ventura City Hall Community Room, 501 Poli St., Ventura.

The course is designed to help attendees enhance their appreciation of the wilderness. Volunteer leaders will demonstrate handson skills in both classroom and outdoor settings.

Lectures will cover backpacking, clothing, equipment, first aid, safety, navigation, weather and animal tracking. Information on cooking outdoors and traveling in varied conditions will also be given. Weekend outings will be led by the staff.

Participants must supply their own equipment.

The cost is $145 for Sierra Club members and $160 for nonmembers.
