Apartment fire in T.O. displaces 10 people, nobody is injured
      An apartment fire in Thousand Oaks left 10 people in eight units without homes or belongings. Fifty-five firefighters, in six engines and four ladder trucks, and other fire support personnel took about an hour to knock the fire down after the call went out at 10:26 p.m. Dec. 29, Capt. Ron Oatman said.

Free teen driver program is scheduled
      The Thousand Oaks Police Department will host a Smart Start program to educate teen drivers from 6 to 9 p.m. Thurs., Jan. 29 at the Thousand Oaks Police Station, 2101 E. Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks. The free program is designed to help young drivers and their parents understand the responsibilities and laws associated with driving.

Thousand Oaks pays $1 million for scenic open space
      Thousand Oaks quickly put $1 million in the pocket of the Operating Engineers Pension Trust Fund after the group's Realtor advertised in the Dec. 18 Thousand Oaks Acorn. The real estate advertisement in the paper caught the interest of city officials, who quickly made an offer to pay the asking price of $1 million for 8.

Park district loses Mike Berger
      Longtime resident Mike Berger resigned from the board of directors of Conejo Recreation and Park District in December after 24 years of service. American Red Cross names new board of directors
      The American Red Cross of Ventura County has announced the newest members of its board of directors for 2008-09. The group includes four residents from Thousand Oaks and one from Oak Park. Jacqui Irwin, former Thousand Oaks mayor, was appointed to the city's planning commission in 2003 and elected to the Thousand Oaks City Council in 2004.

Thieves steal awards intended for Girl Scouts in T.O.

Making a better world
     REACHING THE PINNACLE IN SCOUTING- - Leanna Morinishi, left, an MIT freshman, and Jillia Fongheiser, a UC Berkeley freshman, have earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, Scouting's highest honor. For their projects, Fongheiser, who graduated from Westlake High School, created blankets for women and children at the Coalition Against Domestic Violence in Oxnard. Morinishi refurbished a day care center in the inner city of Los Angeles. She attended Westlake High as a freshman before moving to St. Louis, where she would later graduate from Marquette High School. The Gold Award requires a community service project of 60 hours or more and leadership skills.

     OUTRAGEOUS SQUIRREL STEALS STUFFING FROM PATIO FURNITURE TO FEATHER HER OWN NEST—The Eby family of the Wildflower neighborhood of Thousand Oaks has been entertained by this squirrel who single-handedly destroyed their patio furniture to build her nest. We're not insinuating that it's the female squirrels who blatantly steal things to make their nests. Instead, we're flat out accusing girl squirrels of this crime.
