The Open Classrooms were established in 1993 as a public school magnet for children in grades K to 6. The school had six teachers and six multiage classrooms.

Parents are required to volunteer a minimum of 1.5 hour per week per child in the program on average over the course of the year.

Many of these activities involve all the grades, allowing children of different ages to work together cooperatively.
