Adjust your driving for winter or risk wrecks

Accidents occur when people drive too fast in rain, snow or fog.

Last year in California, 106 people were killed in accidents that took place in rainy, snowy or foggy conditions. More than 7,696 people were injured in crashes in bad weather conditions.

Follow these safety tips when driving in slick road conditions.

•Check to see that the windshield wipers are in good condition. It's the law to turn on headlights whenever the wipers are on.

•Reduce speed and allow more time for the trip. The maximum posted speed limit may not apply to wet or icy road conditions.

•Slow down in fog. Drive with lights on low beam. Don't stop on a highway unless it's an emergency. Keep a close watch on speed.

•Carry the following items when traveling: tire chains, flashlight and batteries, flares, small shovel, windshield scraper, waterproof clothing that's warm, blankets, snacks, drinking water and cellphone.

To check on road conditions, call the Caltrans road conditions hotline at (800) 427-7623.

Remember to buckle up, slow down, and never drink and drive.
