Crooks strike again, using bogus ATM devices
Thieves are going high-tech to steal money at local banks
      Anyone who used Bank of America automated teller machines in Newbury Park or Thousand Oaks in December should double-check their bank statements for possible fraudulent charges, Detective Eric Buschow said. Police have discovered card skimmers- - devices that cover the slots where bank cards are inserted into ATMs—at some banks.

Single vehicle crash kills North Hills man, 29
      Rolando Gutierrez, 29, was found dead at the scene on Christmas Eve after his 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche crashed in a single vehicle accident, authorities said. According to a police report, the North Hills resident lost control on the wet roadway at 4:36 p.m. while driving east on Wildwood Avenue approaching Olsen Road.

Filmmakers want new ordinance so they can focus on Thousand Oaks

Adjust your driving for winter or risk wrecks
      Accidents occur when people drive too fast in rain, snow or fog. Last year in California, 106 people were killed in accidents that took place in rainy, snowy or foggy conditions. More than 7,696 people were injured in crashes in bad weather conditions.

Cold weather doesn't stop 'flashers'
      Police need help in identifying a man suspected of exposing himself in October to two young girls at Canada Park at Erbes and Olsen roads in Thousand Oaks. He could be the same man who allegedly committed a similar crime in Simi Valley in February.

Be careful if you hike with your dog
      Someone laced raw meat with poisoned grain and put it on a Thousand Oaks open space trail, killing at least one dog, according to Glen Kinney, a ranger for the Conejo Open Space Conservation Agency. The dog died from the poison.

Course on environment offered
      Principles of Environmental Sustainability, a new course offered by UCLA Extension, will explore "green" business practices. The class will meet 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 8 to March 26, in Boelter Hall, Room 5273 on the UCLA campus, Westwood.

      IHOP will be offering a free stack of buttermilk pancakes from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Feb. 24, National Pancake Day. The chain of restaurants is hoping diners will donate what they otherwise would have paid, and proceeds will then go to local children's hospitals.

Humane Society needs donations for barn
      The Humane Society of Ventura County is asking for the public's help to continue housing and treating 37 severely neglected horses that were rescued from a Lockwood Valley ranch on Oct. 8. The 20-stall portable barn that businessman David Murdock loaned to the Humane Society after the rescue was being dismantled and moved this week.
