Election signs shouldn't instigate hate or vandalism

Why can't people be more respectful and tolerant of others who have different political views?

Two weeks ago, I put an "Obama" magnetic bumper sticker on my car. Within a week, someone had keyed my car, a long swipe along the driver's side.

Here in Westlake Village last week, my neighbor put up an "Obama" lawn sign. Two hours later it was gone, stolen in broad daylight.

This also happened to me four years ago when I put a "Kerry" bumper sticker on my car, and while it was parked in the Costco parking lot, someone keyed my car on the passenger side.

This is such a disturbing trend, and I don't understand it. Although I never supported Bush, I never said anything to anyone who displayed a "Bush" bumper sticker, respecting their right to support their candidate.

However, damaging cars or stealing signs are acts of aggression that are beyond disrespectful. If you disagree with my choice for president, feel free to leave a note on my windshield or wait for me to return to ask me why I support Barack Obama.

I'll be more than happy to tell you why, but to vandalize my car is cowardly and unlawful. Lisa Scott Westlake Village
