Center plans workshop for nonprofits The Resource Center for Nonprofit Management at the Ventura County Community Foundation will offer the following upcoming workshops and training courses. •The Board Leadership Institute is a seven-month intensive leadership training program developed to improve volunteer board members' ability to govern nonprofit organizations and to demonstrate leadership for the nonprofit sector. The certificate program, a part of the larger Board Leadership Initiative, provides opportunities for in-depth discussions on key topics affecting board members. Class moderator is Susan Murphy, PhD, associate professor, California Lutheran University School of Business. Community experts with experience in the nonprofit field will facilitate the sessions. The Board Leadership Institute will begin Wed., May 21 from 9 a.m. to noon with breakfast provided. The cost is $375 for the first registrant from an organization and $275 for each additional registrant from the same organization. For information on available scholarships, call Susan Seale at (805) 988-0196, ext. 110. •The Sidney Lyons Leadership Series will be held from 1 to 4 p.m. Thurs., May 15, June 19, July 17 and Aug. 21. This course will cover capacity building and professional leadership development for organizations that serve recovering addicts and those struggling with addiction to alcohol and drugs. In the program, participants will explore facets of transformational change, management and leadership excellence, resource development and professional growth. The cost is $125 for the first registrant from an organization and $75 for each additional person from the same organization. •The Resource Center presents "Making Media Matter: Using Digital Tools to Market Your Message" on Fri., May 23. This is a production, editorial and new media training program designed to prepare nonprofit leaders to create and distribute a piece of digital media, such as a DVD, public service announcement or cable program. This workshop will be at the CAPS-TV Media Center, 65 Day Road in Ventura from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and will include both classroom and hands-on training methods. Topics include scriptwriting, producing and distributing digital media, how to distribute media and how to use various digital media opportunities, such as websites and podcasts. The cost is $125 per person with a continental breakfast and working lunch included. •"Meet the Grantmakers," convening from 10 a.m. to noon Wed., May 7, will provide an opportunity to engage personally with private and corporate foundation representatives. They will explain what they are looking for in successful proposals and how to best determine the foundation fit. Confirmed panelists include representatives from Dole Foods, Proctor & Gamble, Sage Publishing and the Wells Fargo Foundation. The fee is $40.
