Supports pet adoptions by store in Newbury Park

My children and I have always loved going into the Newbury Park Feed and Pet Supply store because they're kind and knowledgeable and it's a fun place. They used to have chickens, and we loved to visit the roosters until the L.A. County people decided it was against L.A. County regulations for them to have those chickens.

Funny, this is Ventura County, and chickens are allowed to be sold here, and I've seen them sold in Agoura and the Valley, which is all L.A. County.

Could they be targeting a local businessman unfairly? They wouldn't do that.

Now there's the dog adoption issue. Just three weeks ago, I was talking to Josh Pasewaldt on a day that he brought in a new arrival of dogs from Kern County. He explained that the extermination - that means death-rate- for dogs is higher there than anywhere in California. He goes there in his own van, pays for the dogs with his own money, spends his time, feeds them and cares for them just to save their lives.

He loses plenty of money on this deal, but he makes a lot of dogs and people very happy. When I asked him why he does it, he said, "I made plenty of money on dogs in my life, and this is my way of giving back to them."

And for this he's punished?

Where is the big crime here? Maybe this is about more than a fire system compliance issue? The March 20 Thousand Oaks Acorn editorial ("A business that saves dogs should be left alone") hit the nail on the head.

While I'm sure there are great people at the Agoura Animal Shelter, its leader isn't one of them. Isn't it her job to help animals, or maybe she's just in it for the money and the power and too worried about her own job and funding for her shelter to do the right thing?

How sad and how shameful when a person tries to do the right thing and some unhappy person tries to take him down.

I guess no good deed goes unpunished. Christine Espe Newbury Park
