Grateful for news article about unwanted handbill advertising I would very much like to thank reporter Nancy Needham for her article regarding my letter to the editor about unwanted handbill advertising in the March 13 Thousand Oaks Acorn. I, too, found that the city allows handbills to be put on private property but not public property. How ridiculous that throwing a handbill on my property is considered a public nuisance while throwing a McDonald's wrapper is considered littering. I honestly don't see the difference. It doesn't surprise me that very few individual households filed for a written materials exemption back in 2005. I lived in Thousand Oaks in 2005- I've lived here for 17 years- and I don't even remember the issue being brought up for review. Even if I'd known about it, it takes an organizer to get the word out and make it happen. It doesn't mean that people aren't interested, but most want someone else to do the legwork. I wouldn't even know where to start. Write an amendment to the city bylaws and stand in front of CVS and Ralphs and get signatures? I guess I'm like all the rest; I'll just grumble and pick up the handbills and add them to the rest of the junk mail in the recycling bin. Like the flier from La Vallette Home Design dropped on my front porch and the Labor Ready flier and scratch pads thrown on my driveway, both left this morning. If this pace keeps up you really might see me standing with a clipboard in front of CVS! Linda Barclay Thousand Oaks |
