Let's keep it positive- for once

Recently there was an editorial in the Acorn in which the editor expressed, somewhat begrudgingly, its readers' need to write in to share "what bugs" us.

After reading this, I sympathized with these journalists in their having to receive negative, complaining letters to the editor from our community on a regular basis and then made a personal vow to never complain to the Acorn again. Keeping in line with this pledge, I'm writing my letter completely free of complaints and negativity.

Hillary Clinton is the first woman to run for this prestigious office, and I'm ecstatic that I and my daughter are experiencing this milestone.

I'm also inspired by the extraordinary teachers and administrators throughout the state who, in spite of the budget crises and cutbacks in education, still wake up every morning, go to their classrooms and do their thing, despite a blatant lack of financial support.

While he's unfortunately still in office, I'm pleased that a majority of Americans have finally seen the light about George W. Bush, his corrupt administration and this war, and that we're no longer destined to become a Big Brother, rightwingrun churchstate.

Again, while we don't know if he'll serve as president, I'm excited to witness the first halfblack/half-white man run for the office; while we undoubtedly still have work to do to achieve complete racial equality, this is a clear testimony that America has made social progress and that we're headed in the right direction.

And finally, while there's still time left for these quasi-issues to surface before the election, it's unlikely, and for that I'm so indescribably happy that gay marriage and undocumented immigrants aren't being used as political scapegoats and that a woman's right to choose is hardly surfacing as well.

We've come a long way, baby!

Thank you, Acorn editors, for your patience and the print space you consistently provide to allow the community to vent and express its gratitude. Tina Aschenbrenner Thousand Oaks
