Empty-nest syndrome to be explored

When children grow up and leave home, parents often find themselves in a state of flux, happy that their children are self-sufficient, yet sad and confused about their changing role as parents.

The empty-nest syndrome will be explored from noon to 1 p.m. Fri., April 4 at the Teen Scene Outpatient Program in Agoura Hills. Helen Edler, M.A., marriage and family therapist intern, will lead the session.

When children leave home, parents are left with a "mixed bag of emotions," Edler said. "While parents are proud and excited about their children's accomplishments and goals, they may also feel sadness and confusion about their children leaving home."

Becoming empty nesters often coincides with other major life events, including retirement, menopause or the illness or death of their own parents. A series of big changes can sometimes be "overwhelming," Edler said.

The Conejo Valley Health Professionals Association is sponsoring the lunchtime session as part of a series designed for mental health professionals and the general public.

The Teen Scene Outpatient Program is at 30343 Canwood St., Ste. 208A, in Agoura Hills.
