Closures a reason to vote for new trustees Your Jan. 24 story on school closures listed eight (candidate) elementary schools that (comprised the list of two that would) be closed. Using my map reading skills, I easily lowered your original eight to three; Maple, Aspen and Ladera. Several parents addressed your Jan. 31 paper with very passionate letters in support of their local schools, one letter from Maple and one from Aspen. I guess these parents can read a map, too. We've lived in Thousand Oaks for over 30 years. Our local school, Weathersfield, is also on the list. During those 30 plus years, Weathersfield has always been one of the top schools in the district. We no longer have any children in school here as our daughter has finished school, gone on to college and now has five kids of her own. Our neighborhood has seen many families come and go, children grown and gone, but one thing also has remained the same. That's Weathersfield. I'm not writing solely to defend my local school, but I am making a plea for all parents to defend theirs. Eight schools are almost half the district. Half the district's parents equal a lot of votes. With an election coming in November, I would hope that all these parents rally together and run some new blood for the school board. As I said earlier, our local school has always remained the same. Just as the two old dinosaurs on the school board. John W. Clay Thousand Oaks |
