Local child chosen to be cover model

The Chumash Interpretive Center has announced that a local child of Chumash descent was chosen to be the cover model for the recently published book "The Chumash (First Americans)."

Sarafina Julian is the daughter of Jamie Julian and granddaughter of Beverly and Jim Folkes. Beverly Folkes is a prominent Chumash elder who lives in Thousand Oaks and serves on the Chumash Interpretive Center's board of directors.

Sarafina, a student at Ladera Elementary School, said, "I'm proud to be a regular schoolgirl that can represent our Chumash tribe and to show people that there are many Native American Indians that still live today."

Along with soccer and Girl Scout activities, Sarafina regularly participates in local and regional powwows and other Native American gatherings with her extended family.

The book is one in a series published by Marshall Cavendish that covers a wide range of Native American tribes. It was published in September 2007 and can be purchased at the Chumash Interpretive Center's museum store.
