Local guide to Super Sunday
By Eliav Appelbaum eliav@theacorn.com

Super Bowl XLII, or 42 for those who are Roman numeral challenged, is just days away.

While every Super Bowl is memorable in its own way- and gives everyone an excuse to throw a shindig- this year's big game could have historical significance.

The New England Patriots will try to become only the second undefeated team in the NFL's modern era, joining the 1972 Miami Dolphins. To get there, the Patriots must defeat the New York Giants. New England beat the Giants 38-35 in its regular-season finale.

The game will be played at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., at 3:30 p.m.

Here is a list of what some local bars and restaurants, but not all, have to offer patrons in Thousand Oaks, Westlake Village and Newbury Park:
Bogie's Bar & Lounge
32001 Agoura Road
Westlake Village
(818) 889-2394

Located at the Westlake Village Inn, Bogie's Bar & Lounge is a classy place for a classic game.

Not a sports bar, Bogie's is open for only one more Sunday this football season- and it plans to go out in style.

With 14 high-definition LCD televisions, not including an 8foot screen, Bogie's can accommodate about 300 people, including 200 on the patio for those who prefer puffing on stogies.

There are five outdoor television sets, while nine TV sets and the big screen will entertain guests who prefer sitting inside.

"It'll be like viewing a game from the owner's box. It's like a private suite," said Chris Cuilty, the chief financial officer of the hotel and Bogie's Bar & Lounge.

"The setting is going to be ideal."

Bogie's will prepare food from a special Super Bowl menu, and it will fire up a barbecue on the patio. There will be plenty of sirloin chili, cornbread, hamburgers, hot dogs and carne asada tacos.

Besides a full bar, six beers are on tap. As a bonus, the Budweiser promotion girls will entertain guests during the first half.

Bogie's opens at 1 p.m. Sunday. Cuilty suggests arriving early.
Crown and Anchor
2891 E. Thousand Oaks Blvd.
Thousand Oaks
(805) 497-0070

There will be live football- the other kind- in the morning. The Super Bowl, featuring American football, will be on every television later in the day at this family friendly English-style pub.

Crown and Anchor is the place to go for Patriots' fans, bar manager Russ Parkes said.

"We have a good mixture of sports fans, and we have a good football crowd even though we're a British pub," said Parkes, who's from across The Pond.

"A lot of fans in Thousand Oaks are from New England. I'm surprised how many people are from Boston and Connecticut. We have lots of Patriots and Red Sox fans."

The game will be featured on five 40-inch flat screen televisions, with seven smaller TVs scattered throughout the bar, restaurant and fenced-off patio. Customers can enjoy the shade of the oak tree while sitting at one of nine patio tables.
Azar's Sports Bar and
Steakhouse
2215 Michael Drive
Newbury Park
(805) 498-2365

Open since 1979, Azar's hopes to get bigger in time for the big game.

Owner Geno Azar hopes that a new dining portion of the restaurant will open by Sunday. If not, Azar's has plenty of room for about 100 fans.

There are 35 televisions, including five bigscreen highdefinition sets. Four of the five big screens are 52-inch sets and the other is 8 feet.

"As we speak, I'm in Circuit City looking to buy more TVs," Azar said on Monday afternoon.

The bar will serve its $3.99 breakfast special of bacon, eggs, toast and home fries, and eight beers will be on tap.

The patio area can hold 35 to 40 people. Even though Pittsburgh Steelers fans gravitate to the bar on Michael Drive, Azar's shows every NFL game on Sunday. Needless to say, Giants and Patriots fans are welcome.

"There's no place like this anymore," Azar said. "It's like a Cheers bar. There's no better food around, and we have some of the best steaks. Everything's made from scratch. . . . We're ready to fire up all the TVs."
Magoo's Sports Grill
722 Wendy Drive
Newbury Park
(805) 498-7200

For $30 on Sunday, fans can get their fill of all the fixings, including pizza, buffalo wings and deep-fried turkey.

Customers must pay to get in the door, and spots are filling up quick. There were only 30 spots left as of Tuesday morning.

Fittingly enough, there will be New England clam chowder for Patriots fans and bratwurst for New Yorkers.

With 17 draft beers, everybody can find a way to quench their thirst. The deep-fried turkey is the real treat on this day, since it's only prepared once a year. The turkey is injected with spices and left in brine overnight. On game day, the turkey will be cooked in a large vat of oil.

"It's as juicy as you can get them," owner Mark McGuire said.

Magoo's can accommodate about 100 people, and has 30 television sets. Also, the restaurant will be giving away raffle prizes, including neon signs, Super Bowl Tshirts, gift certificates and other items saved up throughout the year.
Bandits' Grill & Bar
589 N. Moorpark Road
Thousand Oaks
(805) 497-7427

Bandits' will be celebrating its 18th anniversary just in time for Super Bowl Sunday.

From 4 to 8 p.m., the restaurant will give a complimentary appetizer platter of zucchini and onion rings to all guests who spend $20 or more. All day Sunday, eight draft beers will be half price.

With four large flat-screen televisions, Bandits' can seat 241 guests. The Bandits' restaurant in Camarillo will also have the same appetizer special.

"It's a fun, casual atmosphere," general manager Bob Engle said.
