Parent Talk series presents reading expert
By Joann Groff joann@theacorn.com

The Parent Talk Lecture Series is presenting Jim Trelease, an expert in helping kids learn to love reading, just before he plans to retire after a 30-year career.

Author of "The Read-Aloud Handbook," Trelease will speak from 7 to 9 p.m. Tues., Jan. 29 at Ascension Lutheran Church, 1600 E. Hillcrest Drive in Thousand Oaks.

"Teaching a child to read is one thing," Trelease said. "Teaching him or her to want to read is what this program is all about. Kids don't have favorite vowels- they have favorite stories. Who ever found a child in bed with a flashlight and a workbook?"

The author's presentations combine extensive research with personal experiences.

Georgette McBreen, Parent/ Teacher Talk coordinator said Trelease is funny and has a special way of informing parents.

"Every single person that leaves there feels great," said McBreen. "He's inspiring. His message is for parents, teachers, librarians and anyone who wants to make a difference in the lives of children."

She said Trelease has spoken as part of Parent Talk three times in the past.

Tickets are $15 presale and $20 at the door. Call Conejo Valley Adult School Parenting Program at (805) 492-8837 for ticket-ordering information.

In a special evening for teachers, Teacher Talk will host Trelease from 6 to 9 p.m. Mon., Jan. 28 at the Horizon Hills campus. Tickets are also $15 presale or $20 at the door. Call the above number for ticket orders.
