Westlake High School Art Club hosts Winter Art Gallery
ART APPRECIATION ON CAMPUS- Westlake High School seniors Roy Hu, Soumya Karlamangla and Tim Pang observe some artwork while walking up the school library's walkway. The Westlake High School Art Club is hosting its first Winter Art Gallery, a display of studentproduced artwork set up in the school's library. The show began on Dec. 8 and continues through tomorrow, Fri., Dec. 19- right before the beginning of winter break.
For about a month, the Art Club has been collecting pieces from students enrolled in art classes and other artistically talented individuals at Westlake High School. The students were asked to create artwork relating to the gallery's theme—''The Color of Life"—but the pieces were collected regardless of relation to the theme.
Members of the Art Club spent time matting all of the collected artwork, giving each piece a solid, white frame as well as a name tag. More than 60 pieces of art were received, each being carefully put up for opening day.
Opening day was a special event. Co-presidents Vivian Shi and Lucy Gao invited a string quartet to play in the library at lunchtime when the gallery was officially open to all students. Karen Tsai, Goldie Shih, Katherine Sun and Alvin Sun played a variety of music to give the library an artistic ambience.
Overall, it opened eyes to the arts in both music and drawing.
The art pieces included a wide variety of medias, including oil, acrylics, watercolors, colored pencils, sketches and digitally created works.
The Art Club was established last year by Lucy Gao and Vivian Shi. Its club adviser is John Farmer, the department chair for visual and applied technology.
The Art Club meets at lunch every Monday in the art room.
