Cops give safety tips for holiday shoppers

The following tips can help shoppers be prepared and aware during the holiday season.

•Dress casually and comfortably. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry.

•Be careful if carrying a purse or wallet, which are prime targets in crowded areas.

•Never put purse straps around the neck. The sudden impact on the neck from a pursesnatcher could cause injury.

•Wear a fanny pack up front.

•Carry only enough money for purchases.

•Shop during daylight hours if possible. When shopping at night, go with another person and park in well-lit areas.

•After parking a vehicle, roll up all windows and lock all doors. Don't leave valuables in plain sight.

•When walking, be aware of surroundings and other people.

•Be cautious of people loitering in parking lots.

•Use a shopping cart and avoid carrying too many packages. Leave hands free for defense.
