Levett retires from Chamber of Commerce
      Mark T. Jessee, board chair of the Thousand Oaks-Westlake Village Regional Chamber of Commerce, recently announced the retirement of longtime president and CEO Janet Levett effective Jan. 30. Levett served as Chamber president and CEO for the last 10 years and, prior to that, led the Westlake Village Chamber of Commerce for 10 years.

Brisk cold breezes bring in the bad guys
      Even if the weather outside is frightful and the house looks warm and inviting, one should still take time to lock the car. Even better, remove all the valuables and bring them inside, too. Thousand Oaks Police Detective Eric Buschow said the drop in temperature helps create a jump in vehicle robberies.

The economic slowdown brings more pets to animal shelters
      In 2007, 94 owners surrendered their cats and dogs to the Agoura Animal Shelter during September, October and November. This year the number ran up to 271. Evelina Villa, a shelter outreach staff assistant, said the rise in unwanted pets appears to be linked to the economic challenges people are facing.

Gallegly opposes auto bailout
      U.S. Rep. Elton Gallegly (R-Thousand Oaks) recently voted against the automaker bailout bill. "This bill does not require union members or union leaders to cut pay or benefits. It sets up an auto czar with unlimited control over the American auto industry and with no congressional oversight.

Family of five burned out of northside home
      A family of five was displaced after a blaze began in the bedroom of their condominium in the 500 block of Avenida de la Plata on Dec. 12. The two adults and three children escaped injury. Firefighters from Station No. 35 responded to a one-alarm call at 4:10 a.m. Upon arrival, the firefighters saw smoke emanating from the roof.

T.O. ends link with Sister City
      The Sister City Committee Executive Board recently decided to dissolve the organization after many years of assistance to the city of Spitak, Armenia. The committee will contribute the remaining budget of more than $5,000 to the Spitak school children for food, clothes and financial assistance.

What's up with that?
     IRIS SMOOT/Acorn Newspapers HIDDEN IN PLAIN SIGHT- Two side-by-side storage containers painted with camouflage haven't gone unnoticed by city officials. Community development director John Prescott said the containers next to Conejo School Road, just south of the 101 Freeway, sit partly on private property and on Caltrans right of way property. "It's very unusual," Prescott said. The containers are in violation of the city's zoning ordinance and won't be staying there.       Not too many residents of Thousand Oaks have a genuine train caboose in their backyard. The Hitchings family does. A bright red 1949 Santa Fe caboose arrived at their house in March 2002. Now a railroad crossing sign and a shed that looks like a train station also grace their backyard.

City adopting oak trees to raise money
      The city of Thousand Oaks Adopt An Oak Program allows residents to adopt one of the local oak trees. Trees can be adopted in honor or in memory of loved ones, coworkers or friends. The program raises funds for enhancing maintenance of the city's 15,000 acres of open space and development of public recreational facilities.

      A program that provides holiday cheer to foster children is back at The Oaks mall in Thousand Oaks after a threeyear absence. The Giving Tree holiday drive, held at The Oaks for nearly two decades, relocated to the Janss Marketplace in Thousand Oaks three years ago after The Oaks lost retailer KB Toys.

Manna needs food and cash
Donations accepted until 3 p.m. Tuesday
      With fewer corporate donations, local food bank Manna is struggling to fill the need for food for about 500 more families than last year. Donations of holiday dinner items such as ham, turkey, fresh potatoes, yams, gravy, cranberry sauce, dinner rolls, pies and fresh vegetables are needed, director John Gorham said.

Boy Scout an Eagle
     TOP RANKED— Joe Christian, 14, a student at Newbury Park High School, will soon be honored at Bethany Baptist Church for achieving the rank of Eagle Scout. For his project, Joe helped renovate the baseball fields at Sequoia Middle School. He got help from fellow Boy Scouts in Troop No. 787, from classmates in Associated Student Government and from former teammates in Pony Baseball and on his former traveling team. He's the son of Catherine and William Christian.

Gold Award recipient
     ACHIEVER—Nadia Safaeinili has achieved the Gold Award, the pinnacle in Girl Scouts. Nadia, a senior at Thousand Oaks High School, helped organize a high school program to help autistic children and their families. Under the license and supervision of a behavioral psychologist, Nadia trained high school students in play therapy to help autistic children reach their full potential. Parents could do errands while trained students helped their children. She's the daughter of Ali and Lisa Safaeinili.

Reagan Library extends hours for Christmas exhibit
      The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum presents the 15th annual Christmas Around the World Exhibit through Jan. 4 at the museum, 40 Presidential Drive, Simi Valley. This year's exhibit has been expanded to more than 4,000 square feet of indoor gallery space.
