In State of the City address, mayor calls for volunteerism
      Mayor Jacqui Irwin urged her audience to get involved in the community in her farewell speech at the State of the City address and luncheon on Tuesday. She spoke before about 240 people who attended the event at the Los Robles Greens Banquet Center.

Thieves steal donations intended to help orphans
      Thieves have been stealing donation boxes belonging to The Orphan Foundation, a nonprofit group formed by Newbury Park residents Joe and Tatiana DiDonato to help orphans from the U.S. and around the world find permanent homes with loving families.

Builders walk away from T.O. projects
      Due to financial troubles, developers are stopping or delaying residential construction at five locations in Thousand Oaks. The developer of property once planned to become seven single-family homes on the northeast corner of Hillcrest Drive and Conejo School Road has gone bankrupt, according to Jay Spurgin, city engineer.

Info sought on stolen playhouse
      The sheriff department's Headquarters Detective Bureau is investigating the theft of a trailer and a playhouse. The theft occurred on Nov. 21 in the industrial area of El Rio. The trailer has been recovered, but the playhouse is still missing.

Lowe's, Home Depot must pay fines in Ventura County
      The Consumer and Environmental Protection Unit of the Ventura County district attorney's office has filed and settled a civil action against Lowe's and Home Depot. Between December 2003 and March 2007, Lowe's sold 422 water heater installations and collected related permit fees at its stores in Simi Valley and Ventura.

Artists' reception will be Dec. 13
      The Thousand Oaks Community Gallery will host a reception from 3 to 6 p.m. Sat., Dec. 13 at the gallery, 2331-A Borchard Road, Newbury Park. The reception is in honor of the second annual "Five Artists Paint ing" Working Artists Holiday Show and Exhibition, which features works by Pong Apinyavat, Bob Engel, Ron McKee, Irv Morgan and Craig Morton.

Blaze doused by firefighters before it spread
     WENDY PIERRO/Acorn Newspapers WINDS A FACTOR- Thirty acres of steep terrain began burning at the top of the Conejo grade, north of the 101 Freeway at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday. The blaze continued for about 24 hours until the Ventura County Fire Department put it out using 150 personnel, three helicopters, hand crews, police help, fire trucks and bulldozers. They fought against 10- to 20-mph winds. The brushfire also caused a major tie-up on the 101 Freeway that lasted through the evening commute.

Lottery scams just never go away
      The Ventura County Sheriff's Department has issued a warning regarding lottery scams. Residents should be wary of letters or phone calls explaining that they've won something but have to pay taxes or a fee in order to claim the prize. Avoid answering any letters or calls originating from outside the United States, especially Canada or Nigeria.

      The Grant Brimhall/Thousand Oaks Library has announced its upcoming events schedule. •The Thousand Oaks and Newbury Park Branch libraries will close at 1 p.m. on Wed., Dec. 24 and remain closed on Thurs., Dec. 25. Regular hours will resume from Fri., Dec. 26 to Tues., Dec. 30.

Gift wrap to benefit orphan group
      The Orphan Foundation will be wrapping books for the holidays in exchange for donations from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 12, 15, 16 and 17 at Borders books, 125 W. Thousand Oaks Blvd., Thousand Oaks. Three adults from the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program will take part in each session. Borders will supply all the wrapping supplies.

New musical celebrates arts and composer
      Celebrities will be in the audience at the Thousand Oaks High School performing arts center this weekend when an original show with local roots debuts. The musical "7th and Schwartz," which celebrates theater composer Steven Schwartz, was conceived, written and produced by Debi Lewis, a Thousand Oaks voice coach, and her son, Asher, a Los Angeles video editor.

      A psychologist will discuss depression that follows the loss of a relationship at 3 p.m. tomorrow, Fri., Dec. 12, at California Lutheran University. Daniel Paul, PhD, will give a presentation titled "On Depression and Narcissism" in the Roth Nelson Room.

T.O. aviation expert dies
      John Anthony David Gorham, a pioneering aviation engineer and manufacturer, died on Nov. 28 after complications from a fall at home. He was 86. The former Thousand Oaks resident was a World War II veteran who served in India designing test equipment and repairing combat aircraft.
