Lt. Dan Rosenberg, the lead investigator on the case, said Weston Thomas McCahon, 19, was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Oct. 23 and transported to Southern California where he was charged with the crime.

McCahon pleaded not guilty to the murder charge at his Nov. 6 arraignment in Los Angeles.

McCahon and Mathews were friends, Rosenberg said.

"We are alleging that Weston Thomas McCahon gave drugs to the victim, Kaylin Mathews, and she overdosed," said Shiara Davila, spokesperson for the Los Angeles district attorney's office. "Furthermore, we allege that he dumped the body in Lobo Canyon and fled the jurisdiction."

According to an Oct. 23 report in the Tahoe Daily Tribune, McCahon was living in South Lake Tahoe and was on his way to class at Lake Tahoe Community College when arrested by local authorities.

If convicted, McCahon faces a 15-year-to-life jail sentence. His bond was set at $1 million, but may be reduced at the next court hearing on Dec. 19, Davila said.

"A lot of lives are ruined right now—Kaylin's life, her family's life and now Weston's life," Rosenberg said.

Several citizens came forward with information about McCahon's involvement with Mathews, the detective said.

"It was very courageous of them to step forward and get involved. They provided crucial information," including details that linked McCahon to Mathews right before she died, Rosenberg said.

"We're not talking about a predator," Rosenberg said regarding the suspect. "We're talking about very, very poor choices (made by McCahon)."

Mathews was born on March 1, 1988, in Borger, Texas. A memorial service at a church in the small, north Texas town was held for Mathews on July 12. She graduated from Indian Hills High School in Calabasas in 2005 and later worked as a disc jockey.
