Family literacy night coming to Thousand Oaks

Conejo Valley Neighborhood for Learning will host a Family Literacy Fun Night at 6:30 p.m. Thurs., Nov. 13 at Park Oaks Elementary School, 1335 Calle Bouganvilla, Thousand Oaks.

The event is part of the November "Read Early, Read Aloud" Early Literacy campaign and is aimed at families with children up to age 5. Preschool teachers will be reading "More Spaghetti, I Say" by Rita Gelman to participating families.

Space is limited, and reservations are required.

Conejo Valley Neighborhood for Learning offers the following tips for reading aloud to young children:

•Read every day, for at least 30 minutes total

•Read for a few minutes at a time; children may only sit for a short time for a story

•Makethestorycom e alive and create voices for the characters

•Ask questions about the story, and let the child ask questions, too

•For infants, choose simple and colorful cloth or vinyl books. For preschoolers, choose books with repetition or rhyme.
