Campaign signs and buttons are forbidden at polling places Signs, T-shirts and buttons promoting any candidate or proposition are not allowed in polling places on Election Day. "It's called electioneering, and California election code has prohibited that for years and years," said Phil Schmit, Ventura County recorder. The code states, in part, that no person on Election Day or at any time that a voter may be casting a ballot, shall, within 100 feet of a polling place or an election official's office, circulate a petition, solicit a vote or speak to a voter on the subject of his or her ballot. Any person who violates the electioneering law is guilty of a misdemeanor, Schmit said. That doesn't mean the police will be called. "We'll just ask them to cover it up," he said. Schmit said that other counties in California are prepared to provide disposable smocks in response to rumors that some people are planning to purposely wear clothes that back certain candidates or propositions. —Nancy Needham |
