Water conservation may become mandatory
      Local water districts are considering tougher measures to convince the public that water conservation is vital in Southern California. Due to a prolonged drought and a court-ordered sanction that limits the amount of water flowing from northern to southern parts of California, water conservation is receiving greater scrutiny. Too many children are killed in vehicle crashes because of improper restraints, CHP says
      Motor vehicle crashes are one of the leading causes of death in California for children ages 14 and under, with the No. 1 contributing factor being unrestrained or improperly restrained children. "You can never be too careful when it comes to protecting your children," said California Highway Patrol Commissioner Joe Farrow.

City continues to look at bicycle safety
      Bicycle accidents are up in Thousand Oaks, with 25 incidents from January through September this year compared to 18 bicycle accidents for all of 2007, according to city reports. John Helliwell, city traffic specialist in the public works department, said there's no pattern to the accidents.

      Daphne's Greek Cafe opens in a new location by the fountain at the Janss Marketplace, Moorpark Road and Hillcrest Drive in Thousand Oaks. This is the cafe's second location in Conejo Valley.      WOMEN IN HISTORY TO BE REMEMBERED—Mary Schwabauer, left, past chair of Ventura County Community Foundation, awards a grant of $4,000 to Elaine Williams of Conejo Valley Historical Society. The local group will use the money to publish "Ladies of the Conejo," stories about 17 women who made significant contributions in the area from 1833 to 1955. Assistance League goes shopping
     HELPING AGAIN- Since the beginning of the school year, Assistance League of Conejo Valley (ALCV) has clothed more than 900 children from 12 schools in Conejo Valley. Kids from disadvantaged families attended shopping events at Target stores in Newbury Park, Moorpark and Simi Valley. Each qualifying child received a voucher for $75 for school shoes and clothes.
