Local schools donate books

Madrona Elementary School in Thousand Oaks and Triton Academy in Camarillo recently teamed up to donate books to students and create a larger student library at a new school designed for children with autism.

Every year, Madrona Elementary hosts a fundraising book fair during its parent conference week. This year the school chose Triton Academy as the beneficiary.

Each classroom at Madrona has a "One for Books" collection jar and, during the week of the book fair, the students brought in change for their classroom jar. All money collected at Madrona benefited Triton Academy's library. Triton Academy students were involved with the event by donating their change.

Triton Academy, now in its second year, is a school within the Ventura County Office of Education that utilizes evidencebased educational practices for students with autism.

As part of the program, Scholastic Books matched the donations raised in the schools with a separate donation to three nonprofit organizations dedicated to helping children and families in need, including Kids in Distressed Situations Inc., National Center for Family Literacy and the Marine Toys for Tots Foundation.
