Spooky software can change phone into jack-o'-lantern
Greg Morris It's kind of spooky, but a Thousand Oaks software designer has found a way to spread Halloween thrills throughout the world.
Greg Morris, owner of Thousand Oaksbased Energize Software, developed Halloween Experience, a Halloweenthemed entertainment application for Apple iPhones and iPods.
"This has exceeded my expectations," he said.
There's plenty of competition, but his software has been a top seller, he said. It has sold to people all over the world, including customers in Russia, Japan and South America.
"Apple distributes it for me and takes about 30 percent of the profits," Morris said.
Those who go to www.apple .com/iphone/appstore can buy his software for about 99 cents and give their iPhone or iPod a Halloween theme. Some of the features are spooky sounds whenever the phone is tilted, a Halloween hangman game and a glowing jacko'lantern.
"It takes advantage of what the iPhone does," Morris said.
Sounds include screams, haunted music, witch cackles, thunder and a blood-curdling screech.
JANN HENDRY/Acorn Newspapers WHAT WILL THEY THINK OF NEXT?- IPhone users can get into the Halloween spirit thanks to an application designed by T.O. resident Greg Morris. Morris, a former aerospace electrical engineer, continues to update the software and will soon add a scoring system for the hangman game, he said. The updates are free for those who purchased the software, he said.
The screens and features can be seen at www.energizesoftware .com. The website has a connection to a YouTube video of the Halloween Experience in action.
It took about six-weeks for the 19-year Thousand Oaks resident to develop the product.
"Halloween is my favorite holiday, and so, when I was thinking about what to design, Halloween came to mind," Morris said.
Most of the customer reviews at the Apple website give the software the maximum five stars, adding comments about how much fun it is to play and how easy it is to use.
"I like reading the reviews and learning how much people like my work," Morris said.
Morris continues to develop software for Apple products and plans to have another app soon: Holiday Countdown will help people keep track of how many days there are to their next important traditional or personal holiday.
