New CLU theater opens with one-act plays

The Fall Blackbox Series will feature two student-directed plays. The name of the new theater will be unveiled during an opening night gala at 7 p.m. Thurs., Oct. 23.
Playwright Brigette Stevenson of Newbury Park will debut her new work, "Flooding the Grand." The play explores the mysterious and fractured relationships of two sisters with their mother, nature, love and one another.
Stevenson is a senior English major at CLU. Earlier this year, one of her plays was selected to be performed at the Kennedy Center American College Theater Festival Region VIII competition in Los Angeles. Director Kaila Hochhalter of Phoenix is a senior theater arts major.
Eric Coble's "Bright Ideas," directed by theater arts senior Chelsea Brown of Santa Barbara, is a modern comedy that details the lengths parents will go to get their children into preschool.
CLU's Little Theatre, where plays and classes had been held for more than 40 years, was demolished in September, and the university's old gymnasium was transformed into a new theater space.
Admission to the series is free. For more information, call the Theatre Arts Department at (805) 493-3415.
