Monday the last day to register to vote
      The last day to register to vote for the Nov. 4 presidential general election is Mon., Oct. 20. The completed voter registration form must be postmarked by that date to be included in the election. Registration forms are available throughout the county at city halls, post offices, libraries, Chambers of Commerce and fire stations.

Fountains would be musical if donor is found
      PEOPLE LOVE WATER- Whether it's a sandy ocean beach, a lazy river flowing by, a creek, lake, pond, swimming pool or fountain, human beings are naturally attracted to water. Cities have known for years that water attractions, like the fountain display at T.O.'s Civic Arts Plaza, left, are places that draw people. Water, for some reason, is mesmerizing.

Poker tourney is postponed
      Due to the uncertain economy and sluggish registration, the second annual Kiwanis Club of Thousand Oaks Texas Hold 'em Poker Tournament has been postponed. It was originally scheduled for Sun., Nov. 9 at Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks.

WHS Baseball Boosters to host golf tournament
      The Westlake High School Baseball Booster Club will have its annual golf fundraiser Mon., Nov. 3 at Moorpark Country Club, 11800 Championship Drive, Moorpark. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and tee-off will be at 10 a.m. The event will include lunch from Dakota's restaurant, dinner at Moorpark Country Club, and silent and live auctions.

      Lesley Leighton was named artistic director of the Los Robles Master Chorale during a reception hosted by the chorale's board of directors recently in Thousand Oaks. Leighton's goals include building new partnerships within the community while continuing the longstanding mission of the group to give back to the community that has long supported it.

Court elects judges
      The judges of the Ventura Superior Court have elected Judge Kevin J. McGee as presiding judge and Judge Vincent J. O'Neill Jr. as assistant presiding judge for 2009 and 2010. The new term for both begins Jan. 1, 2009.

      An article last week said that Bernadette Nader recently opened a music and voice facility in Westlake Village. Nader has actually been giving music lessons in Conejo Valley for many years. A photo caption of candidates running for the Conejo Valley Unified School District Board of Education last week showed and identified only three challengers.

      The Distinguished Speakers Series of Thousand Oaks has lined up an array of presenters for the upcoming 200809 season, its eighth year at the Thousand Oaks Civic Arts Plaza, 2100 E. T.O. man wins race for healthy babies
     IRIS SMOOT/Acorn Newspapers RACING FOR JASON- Overall male winner Dan Goldstein of Thousand Oaks gives the UCLA mascot Bruin a high five after receiving his medal for a time of 18 minutes 17 seconds in the inaugural Jason's Race 5K/Mad Dash last Sunday morning in the city of Westlake Village. All proceeds from the race will go toward the Jason Allen Lutz Memorial Fund to benefit sudden infant death syndrome research in memory of Jason, a 4-month-old who died on March 11, 2008.

      As the T.O. Acorn was going to press, we learned that Saturday's bike rodeo has been canceled due to the fires. The event was planned for Sat., Oct. 18 at Conejo Creek Park North, which became a staging area for firefighters.

      For the seventh time, the credit card-sized Teen Assist card, which holds a directory of hotlines for teens, has been updated by the Conejo/Las Virgenes Future Foundation. Executive Director Fran Brough called the card "userfriendly" for teens.
