It's crime prevention month
      October is recognized nationally as Crime Prevention Month, and the Thousand Oaks Police Department is participating by giving crime prevention talks and police station tours. Presentations will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Thurs. Oct. 9 and 30 at 2101 E. Olsen Road, Thousand Oaks.

Longtime Chinese restaurant closes in T.O.
      Disappointed customers, expecting to eat Chinese food, instead lined up outside Chen's Szechwan Restaurant at 2024 E. Avenida de Los Arboles in the Vons shopping center to read a letter taped to the door. "We regret to inform you that Chen's Restaurant will be permanently closed as of Sept. 30, 2008.

Council challenger says he has an independent voice
      A Thousand Oaks resident for 26 years, Ramaul Rush said he's decided to run for City Council because he has an independent voice and a love for his community. The certified mediator with a law degree and a college teaching credential believes his communication skills and ability to be an independent policy decision-maker would serve the city well.

What's up with that?
     JANN HENDRY/Acorn Newspapers GOODBYE TO THE OLD HOME DEPOT—A wrecking ball has destroyed the old Home Depot at Ventu Park Road and the 101 Freeway to make way for an 87,938-square-foot shopping center that will include a Walgreen's and a 75,950-square-foot Hampton Inn. The new development will be built with a contemporary Mediterranean-style look. Restaurants and other retail shops are expected in the future. The project is expected to include 508 shared parking spaces. The 10-year-old oak tree on the site will be transplanted because it obstructed the future drugstore's drive-through. Other oak trees facing the axe will be replaced with mature trees. If the replacements die, two oak trees must be planted for each.

Peeping Tom suspect to be sentenced
      Nearly six months after he was arrested, the man accused of secretly videotaping female students in an Oaks Christian school locker room is scheduled to be sentenced in a Van Nuys court. Shiara Davila, spokesperson for the Los Angeles district attorney's office, said the prosecution expects that Hilario Hernandez Medina will be sentenced Oct.

     PRACTICES START TONIGHT- Taylor Atkins, the reigning Miss California Teen USA, is scheduled to perform and be master of ceremonies at a pageant on Sun., Nov. 30 at the Pacifica Performing Arts Center, 600 W. Gonzales Road in Oxnard. Practices for applicants begin at 6:30 p.m. tonight at Brekke Elementary School, 1400 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, also in Oxnard. There are two categories: Teen, ages 13 to 17, and Miss, ages 17 to 25. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, never married or pregnant, and residents of California for the last six months. Rescued horses need extra help from community volunteers
      The Humane Society of Ventura County is reaching out to the community for extra help and assistance in the care of 13 severely neglected horses that were rescued by Animal Control officers and humane officers from a local ranch on Sept. 25.
