JANN HENDRY/Acorn Newspapers BURNER—Newbury Park wideout Phillip Muscarella, left, outraces a pair of Camarillo defenders during last week's 14-7 NPHS win. Buena (1-0) at Thousand Oaks (1-0)

Outlook: Thousand Oaks looked extremely solid in its 23-14 victory at Valencia, which had entered the contest ranked second in the CIF-Southern Section Northern Division coaches' poll.

Lancer quarterback Ian Shultis completed 12-of-19 passes for 195 yards and two scores; running back John Lister gained 165 yards on 19 carries and had a score, and wideout Robert Mullaney hauled in six catches for 116 yards and a touchdown to fuel TOHS.

The Lancer defense, behind standouts Mitchell Korey and Dereck Jester, will look to bottleup a Buena offense that struggled during its 13-10 overtime victory over Simi Valley in Week 1. Buena had 41 rush attempts in the win.

Saugus (1-0) at Westlake (1-0)

Outlook: This home opener will be Westlake's first game since beating Paso Robles 39-14 on Sept. 6.

In that contest, Warrior senior quarterback Ben Conlin had a school-record 50 pass attempts, 28 of which were completions.

Conlin's favorite target against Paso Robles was James De La Cerna, who caught eight balls for 95 yards and a touchdown. Senior linebacker Chris Cisi led the Warriors with nine tackles and also added a 39-yard scoring run.

In its season opener, Saugus pounded Pasadena 51-12 while putting up 349 rushing yards.

Westlake's rush defense, a question mark before the season started, will be tested.

Last week's top performers

Malcolm Jones, RB/LB, Oaks Christian: Jones, a junior, scored three touchdowns in the second quarter, including two on defense, during Oaks Christian's 43-14 beat down of Muir on the road.

Thousand Oaks defense: Playing in a hostile environment against a highly ranked opponent, the Lancers kept Valencia in check for an impressive 23-14 victory. TOHS had three interceptions in the contest.

Phillip Muscarella, WR/DB, Newbury Park: The junior wideout caught a game-winning 39-yard score from sophomore quarterback Jake Geringer to help lift the Panthers to a 14-7 win at Camarillo.
