The following local students are semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship program, which awards more than $35 million in scholarships annually.

About 90 percent of semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, about half of the finalists will win a scholarship.

Newbury Park High School: Naveen Balan, Aaron Flynn, Sean Huxley, Elena Light, Kelly London, Jenny Qui and Andre Wygle.

La Reina High School: Julianne Brauer, Meagan Martin and Shannon Shaffer.

Thousand Oaks High School: Annalise Bender-Brown, Denis Lin, Stephen Marsh, Thomas Ritch and Shirley Zhang.

Westlake High School: Jennifer Fang, Leo Hei, Jessica Kuecks, Svetlana Lyalina, Maxwell Miletich, Tim Pang, Lynne Qui, Thomas Wong and Carol Yu.
