If City Council incumbents Tom Glancy and Jacqui Irwin are reelected, they may be able to earn lifetime health benefits for themselves and their eligible dependents—paid 100 percent by the city.

The lifetime health benefits are a perk that comes in addition to the more than $19,000 council members earn annually along with medical, dental and vision insurance paid 100 percent by the city. The medical benefits come to about $400 a month maximum and depend on which health insurance plan the council member chooses. The lifetime benefits kick in for council members who serve a minimum of five years and retire from the city after age 50, according to city spokesperson Andrew Powers.

Three individuals formerly associated with the City Council currently receive lifetime health insurance benefits, according to Andrew Powers, city spokesperson. They are former Mayor Judy Lazar; Joette Dell, widow of Councilmember Ed Masry; and Katherine Fiore, wife of the late Mayor Alex Fiore.

Council members also have a $250,000 travel accident insurance plan and receive a $300 annual reimbursement for physical exams as well as reimbursement for authorized cityrelated expenses.

There are also monthly retirement benefits tied to tenure on the council for those who serve for a minimum of five years who are over age 50. The retirement benefits vary by individual depending on what option they choose at the time of retirement and how long they worked for the city.

Retirees also get a $500 death benefit paid by the city.
