City libraries plan 'One City One Book' program
The Grant Brimhall/Thousand Oaks Library has announced upcoming events for the second annual One City One Book program.
This year's book is "What is the What" by Dave Eggers, a novel based on the real-life story of Valentino Achak Deng, one of the lost boys of Sudan who were forced to flee their East African villages during that country's civil war.
Unless otherwise noted, all events take place at the Grant Brimhall/Thousand Oaks Library, 1401 E. Janss Road.
•Several book discussions, including a leader and a facilitator who is familiar with the book, will be held:
Grant Brimhall/Thousand Oaks Library: 10:30 a.m. Sat., Sept. 27; 7 p.m. Wed., Oct. 1; 7 p.m. Tues., Oct. 14; 10:30 a.m. Sat., Oct. 18
Newbury Park Branch Library: 7 p.m. Wed., Sept. 24; 10:30 a.m. Sat., Oct. 4; 7 p.m. Tues., Oct. 7
Barnes and Noble Booksellers: 7 p.m. Mon., Sept. 22
Borders Bookstore: 7 p.m. Mon., Oct. 13
•Performance artist Fern Davye will present Liaisons in Literature at 2 p.m. Sun., Sept. 28. The program is recommended for teens and adults.
•A screening of "God Grew Tired of Us," a documentary about the lost boys of Sudan, will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thurs., Sept. 25. The film, directed by Christopher Dillon Quinn, tells the story of three young men who fled Sudan when war and genocide broke out in the 1980s. The film is rated PG.
